What’s all this then?

Welcome…

Hello and welcome to Animation for Anyone. This project aims to be an online resource designed to teach anyone how to start animating. Whether you’re an illustrator, kinder garden teach or boiler maker, there should be something here to help you learn how to begin your animation journey.

I’ve watched the technical barriers for animation fall away at an astonishing rate, and at the same time the uses for animation increase exponentially.

My ultimate goal here if for Animation for Anyone to be free to use, and as approachable as possible. It does not aim to create master animators but offer a solid foundation for those that are excited about how to make things move.

The approach

The plan here is to create a series of easy to understand films that slowly build a fundamental understanding of animation.

Because animation uses a set of principles that are tightly interconnected people new to animation can easily get lost trying to combine them all before they’re ready. The course will build connections between the core ideas in a logical way, letting students build an intuitive understanding before moving to the next new concept.

Having worked as an animation lead I’ve noticed that this connection between concepts is often what younger animators struggle with, so creating an organised way of thinking about animation will be an important aspect to this resource.

Involving the community-

This is a community focused project. Its important for me to acknowledge that it hopes to serve more than one community. Its primary goal is to serve the community in a general sense, in that it aims to open to people from as many backgrounds and interests as possible. It will also serve the creative community, whether bridging creative skills or

I want to involve the community in the making of Animation for Anyone as much as possible, whether through trailing the resources, creating assets or simply by asking for small donations to help me commission original work for the site. This is a first for me, so bear with me while I fine tune how this will work.

A little about me-

My name is Alex Grigg. I’m an animator from Australia. I’ve been working in the animation industry for a little over 10 years now. I’ve done a bit of everything, from 3D animation, hand drawn animation to direction. I’ve worked on computer games, feature films, VR, music videos and advertising.

I feel obliged to acknowledge that I’m not the world’s best animator, but my hope is that unfortunate shortcoming is beside the point. This website is not designed to be a masterclass, but rather a way to learn from the very beginning to think about animation in a structured and logical way so that learners can animation in projects they care about.
